Oakland, Calif. - Nov. 12, 2008 - The Dallas Independent School District has named neuroscience-based reading intervention software from Scientific Learning Corp (NASDAQ:SCIL) to the Dallas Instructional Materials List. The list recommends specific instructional resources to employees in the district's more than 200 schools. The Fast ForWord® language, literacy and reading products, as well as the Reading AssistantTM advanced speech recognition technology were approved for inclusion on the list.
Proposals for inclusion were considered only from vendors with ample previous experience providing curriculum and instructional materials and whom the district judged as able to show evidence of responsibility through satisfactory past performance and competence. The overall purpose of the review was to determine the alignment of products to the Dallas ISD's educational program, standards and student needs and select the proposals judged to be the most advantageous to the district in terms of alignment, pricing and other evaluation criteria set by the district's Teaching and Learning Division.
"Because we've had such success in Dallas schools we were among the finalists who were selected to give a 30-minute presentation to the district's Teaching and Learning Division," said Robert C. Bowen, chairman and CEO of Scientific Learning. "We were told our presentation was especially strong due to the large number of published studies we have on product efficacy. One we are most proud of is the four-year longitudinal study at Dallas ISD that showed improved TAKS reading scores among the Dallas students who used the Fast ForWord software."
In addition to the studies, Scientific Learning also submitted documentation showing alignment to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards as well as scientifically-based research for specific products.
"Not everyone who presented to the committee was selected," said Bowen. "We are honored by the district's confidence in us. It is the sort of trust we work to building with all our current and future customers."
