OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Scientific Learning Corp. (NASDAQ:SCIL) today announced that it will sponsor Word Wizards, a special program of Bay Area News Group's award-winning Newspapers in Education (NIE) program, for the fourth consecutive year. Scientific Learning creates the Fast ForWord® family of products, educational software that accelerates learning by developing the student brain to process more efficiently.
Word Wizards is a user-friendly guide to help students in grades four through nine improve their performance in reading and writing. The educational outreach program is available, at no cost, to classroom teachers in Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, Napa, Marin and Solano counties. Word Wizards, which also includes sets of classroom newspapers and a curriculum guide, will be delivered to classrooms on Fridays, through Feb. 29, 2008.
"At Scientific Learning, we produce innovative, research-based products that help students develop and strengthen the cognitive skills crucial for reading success," said James Bray, vice president, business development for Scientific Learning. "We're proud to partner with the Bay Area News Group and dedicated educators across the Bay Area to provide high-quality materials to help all students put those skills into practice and achieve reading success. Through programs like Word Wizards and Newspapers in Education, and our own Fast ForWord family of products, we can help all students become lifelong readers."
Over the past 17 years, the community-sponsored NIE program has had a strong presence in thousands of Bay Area classrooms. NIE programs, which are all over the world, help teachers use newspapers in the classroom in creative ways to integrate reading, writing, math, and thinking skills. Studies show that students involved in NIE programs perform at least 10 percent better on standardized tests than students not involved with NIE.
Likewise, the Fast ForWord program has helped students around the world measurably improve their reading skills. The Fast ForWord family of products consists of scientifically proven, intervention programs that apply neuroscience principles to build the fundamental cognitive skills required to read and learn. The products work by improving the brain's processing efficiency - how the brain functions to support learning and intellectual activity, including memory, attention, processing rate, and sequencing - with intensive exercises that adapt to each student's level.
The Fast ForWord products have demonstrated positive effects on a wide variety of student populations, including English language learners, special education students, academically at-risk students, and students performing below their potential. Many students who use Fast ForWord achieve one to two year reading gains in eight to 12 weeks.
